Many people, crutches, staff members, wheelchairs, volunteers and stories have passed through the Royal Free Hospital in the last 15 years but one thing has remained the same, dedicated Volunteer Team Manager Gill Hyatt.
Gill has been responsible for placing and supporting thousands of volunteers who have helped to improve patient’s experiences at the hospital and lend a hand to busy staff. Working closely with Trust staff, Gill has made possible placements for volunteers in advice and patient support roles such as the Macmillan Centre, as Dementia Companions and breast feeding support group. She has also initiated such roles as ward helper positions and the shop trolley service. Gill is kind, non-judgemental and will always go above and beyond to mutually support both patients and her volunteers. “Gill is a real treasure to the hospital. She sees that everyone can be placed in an area that would be good for both the Trust and the volunteer. Her smile is warm and combats any fear that a volunteer might have in starting as a volunteer,” said Keith Hunt MBE, Complementary Therapies Coordinator Royal Free London NHS Trust The diversity and equality within the volunteer service is protected and upheld by Gill’s commitment to inclusivity and to our local community, reflecting the diverse local population. “Gill has been a totally committed and professional member of the department through many changes, providing stability together with sustained development which, together with her sunny personality has made her an invaluable asset to the Royal Free,” said Nicky Begent, previous trustee of the Royal Free Charity. As a champion for patient experience, Gill has worked with many and varying community groups – most recently facilitating local gardeners to create the wonderful garden on Pond Street. Gill was recently nominated for the UNSUNG HERO AWARD, for non-clinical member of staff who has gone that extra mile to put colleagues or patients first, at this year’s hospital OSCAR Awards. Unfortunately she did not receive the top honour but she as recognised for her years of hard work and commitment as a runner up in the category. We look forward to the next 15 years of amazing work from Gill and can’t wait to see the impact that she has on the future of the Royal Free Hospital.
